Municipal Court
Motor Vehicle Offenses
The Municipal Court handles cases involving motor vehicle offenses, including but not limited to driving while intoxicated, driving while suspended and driving without insurance. A conviction for a motor vehicle offense can result in a loss of your driving privileges, incarceration, fines and surcharges by the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission.
A conviction for a motor vehicle violation can also result in an increase in your insurance premiums and can effect your ability to obtain or maintain insurance.
Local Ordinance and Criminal Offenses
The Municipal Court also handles cases involving violations of local ordinances and less serious criminal offenses, for example, harassment, simple assault, criminal mischief and theft. If convicted of these type of offenses, the court may impose a period of incarceration, community service, probation, fines and/or require the person convicted to enter into counseling. A conviction can also impact on your employment and ability to obtain or maintain a professional license.
